FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 28, 2024 – Santa Clara, CA – Major League Rugby (MLR) continues to elevate the professional landscape of rugby in the United States, and this year’s MLR Draft has once again shown the profound impact of the College Rugby Association of America. An impressive 75% of players selected in the 2024 MLR Draft came from the College Rugby Association of America (CRAA), underscoring the vital role that the competition plays in developing the next generation of rugby talent.

The CRAA, which represents some of the top collegiate rugby programs across the country, continues to be a significant pipeline for young athletes making their transition to the professional ranks. With a focus on both academic and athletic excellence, CRAA schools have established themselves as breeding grounds for future rugby stars. This year’s draft marks yet another milestone in the partnership between MLR and CRAA, as more teams recognize the high level of play and preparation that CRAA athletes bring to the professional game. From powerhouse programs to up-and-coming teams, CRAA players were selected throughout the draft, filling key skilled positions and adding depth to MLR rosters.

“We are incredibly proud of the talent coming out of the CRAA and their representation in the MLR Draft,” said Paul Santinelli, Men’s Commissioner at CRAA. “These athletes have worked hard both on and off the field, and their selection by MLR teams speaks volumes about the strength of our programs and the dedication of our student-athletes.”

The continued growth of CRAA talent in the professional ranks aligns with the broader mission to expand rugby’s footprint in the U.S. As more collegiate athletes make the leap to MLR, it paves the way for increased visibility of the sport and its athletes at all levels.

“MLR teams recognize the value of players who have honed their skills in the college system, and the fact that 75% of this year’s draftees came from CRAA schools is a testament to the quality of the rugby being played at the collegiate level,” said Nic Benson, CEO at MLR. “We look forward to seeing these athletes develop into key contributors to our league and the future of USA Rugby.”

The CRAA’s ongoing commitment to fostering talent at the collegiate level will continue to play a critical role in the sport’s growth. With the increasing number of CRAA players making their mark in MLR, the future of USA Rugby looks brighter than ever.
